Bengkung Belly Binding
Belly Binding is an ancient tradition in many eastern cultures. It is a practice of using special knots to tie a long strip of cloth around the abdomen during postpartum recovery to ensure a strong support and increase healing to a woman’s womb after childbirth. Women by instinct are nurturers. In this culture of independence, it’s very rare for the women themselves to be cared for, especially by other women. Belly binding is a ceremony, a ritual of nurturing and healing that recreates the feeling of being surrounded, loved, and noticed. Binding of the belly is not only about weight loss or getting your pre-baby figure back, it is about honoring that space of motherhood. It is about surrounding each other with the most basic and essential of human needs: acceptance and love. When I come to bind your abdomen I bring warmth, understanding, and most of all love. I come to lift you up in a time of vulnerability and healing.
The style of binding that I practice is the Malaysian Bengkung Belly Binding. The bind is most effective and best used the first 8 weeks of postpartum, starting 2 days after birth, but can be useful for support during anytime of the postpartum period, and in some cases up to 2 years postpartum.
Benefits of Belly Binding:
- Helps to draw in the ribcage, belly, and hips. Which have become wide and loose during pregnancy.
- Pulls the separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) back together and speeds core healing.
- Encourages healing from pelvic and pubic separation known as SPD (symphysis Pubis Dysfunction). A partial bind during pregnancy can be especially beneficial for pelvic support.
- Helps comfort and ease the “empty” feeling after childbirth, miscarriage or stillbirth.
- Nurtures the mother during this time of transition and healing
- Helps prevent back pain through reminding you to sit and walk straight.
- Decreases postpartum Bleeding by speeding up the process of getting rid of wasted blood in natural way.
- In the case of a miscarriage or still birth, belly binding can improve emotional healing as it speeds physical healing.
